Recognized for a Reason: Alpha Omega and the Pursuit of Sustainable Winemaking in Napa Valley

Alpha Omega was recently featured in a Business Spotlight published by the City of Napa’s Economic Development office on January 10, 2023. The feature recognized Alpha Omega as a leader in sustainability and as a cornerstone of Napa Valley’s wine community. What follows is our own reflection on that recognition and what it means to us.

Rooted in the Land, Committed to Its Future

There is a phrase Robin Baggett returns to often when asked about Alpha Omega’s approach to the environment. “We all should want to leave this world in a better place than we found it,” he says. “It is simply the right thing to do.”

That conviction is not a policy statement. It is the animating spirit behind more than a decade of environmental stewardship at Alpha Omega, and it is why the City of Napa’s Economic Development office chose to spotlight our winery as a model of sustainable business leadership in the region.

For Robin and Michelle Baggett, who founded Alpha Omega in 2006 on the Rutherford Bench of Napa Valley, the land has never been an abstraction. It is the source of everything. Every grape, every vintage, every bottle begins here, in the volcanic and alluvial soils of one of the world’s most storied wine regions. Protecting that land is not a brand choice. It is a responsibility.

A Decade-Long Commitment to Sustainable Viticulture

Alpha Omega’s sustainability journey began well before it became an industry conversation. In 2009, the winery installed a Lyve water reclamation system, sourced from New Zealand, to process domestic and winery wastewater into clean, reusable water. That water is returned to the estate vineyard and landscaping through drip irrigation. Over the years, the system has processed more than 11 million gallons of wastewater. That figure alone speaks to how deeply the commitment runs.

Furthermore, the winery later transitioned to renewable energy, installing a 400-kilowatt solar power system across five solar arrays. These structures were architecturally designed to serve a dual purpose: they generate clean power while providing shade for parking and winery equipment. Today, Alpha Omega operates almost entirely on solar energy.

As a member of both the Porto Protocol and the Napa Green Winery program, Alpha Omega shares its real-time solar and energy use data publicly. Transparency, in this context, is a form of accountability. It is one thing to pursue sustainability quietly. It is another to open the data to scrutiny and let the results speak.

For guests arriving at the estate, four electric vehicle charging stations are available on-site, including three dedicated Tesla chargers. Filtered water, processed through the Vivreau system, is served in reusable glass bottles. These details matter. They reflect a philosophy that extends from the vineyard into every corner of the guest experience.

Napa Green Certified: A Recognition Earned, Not Awarded

Napa Green certification is among the most rigorous environmental standards in the American wine industry. It covers both land and winery operations, requiring verifiable progress across water conservation, greenhouse gas reduction, waste diversion, and responsible purchasing. Alpha Omega holds certification in both categories.

That dual certification reflects years of incremental, intentional work. It also reflects something harder to quantify: a culture within the winery that treats environmental stewardship as ongoing, never finished. The goal is not to reach a threshold and stop. It is to keep finding new ways to reduce impact, protect resources, and honor the land that makes these wines possible.

Our sustainable farming practices extend across all of our estate and sourced vineyard sites, from the Rutherford Bench to the high-elevation volcanic soils of Atlas Peak and the cool-climate growing conditions of Oak Knoll District. The land varies. The commitment does not.

Alpha Omega Collective: Where Sustainability Meets the Table

In 2019, the success of the Rutherford estate led to the opening of Alpha Omega Collective, a tasting room in the heart of downtown Napa at 1245 First Street. The space occupies a prime corner on bustling First Street and offers a different kind of wine experience: one grounded in education, food, and conversation.

At Alpha Omega Collective, guests can taste wines from Alpha Omega alongside selections from our sister wineries. Food pairings feature dishes prepared in an onsite kitchen using seasonally and locally sourced ingredients. Knowledgeable hosts guide visitors through the tasting experience, including the story of how sustainable practices shape the wines in the glass. The space was refreshed in late 2022 and continues to welcome guests looking for something genuinely distinctive in downtown Napa.

In this way, sustainability at Alpha Omega is not a back-of-house operation. It is part of the conversation, shared openly with every visitor who asks where these wines come from and why they taste the way they do.

Giving Back to the Community That Sustains Us

Environmental stewardship, for the Baggetts, has always existed alongside a broader sense of community responsibility. Alpha Omega has been a consistent supporter of Auction Napa Valley, the V Foundation Wine Celebration for cancer research, Festival Napa Valley, and annual giving programs including a Season of Giving Toy Drive that has contributed more than 1,800 toys to children in need since 2017.

These efforts are not separate from the winery’s mission. They reflect the same belief that Robin articulated simply and directly: leave this world in a better place than you found it. Wines Worth Preserving the Land For

None of this would matter if the wines did not reflect the land they come from. At Alpha Omega, every bottle begins in a specific place: a particular vineyard, a particular sub-appellation, a particular combination of soil, elevation, and climate. Head Winemaker Melissa Paris and Consulting Winemaker Andy Erickson shape each wine to express that place with precision and honesty.

The Rutherford Bench, with its famous dusty soils and warm afternoons tempered by afternoon breezes, produces Cabernet Sauvignon of signature structure and elegance. Atlas Peak, high in the Vaca Mountains at nearly 2,000 feet, yields wines of intense concentration and vibrant minerality. Mount Veeder, in the southern Mayacamas range, pushes vines to their limits and rewards patience with wines of mountain spice and unwavering focus.

These are wines made with the understanding that the land is finite and irreplaceable. The sustainable practices behind them are not incidental. They are essential.
