Houyi (pronounced who–yee) was a mythical Chinese archer who saved the Earth from the sudden appearance of ten suns in the sky by shooting down nine of them. Houyi Vineyard is in the Pritchard Hill region, east of Rutherford in the heart of the Vaca Mountains. Viticulture in Pritchard Hill dates to 1890's and the region now produces some of Napa Valley’s most compelling wines. Perched at 1,300 feet, Houyi is a dramatic, south facing, rock strewn vineyard accentuated by warm, sunny afternoons.
Yountville’s southerly location in the Napa Valley takes advantage of cool winds from Carneros and extended fog cover during the day that makes this region ideal for steady ripening of red grapes. The southwestern corner of the Yountville AVA and the foothills of the Mayacamas, with its rocky alluvial soils, was the primary source of grapes for this vintage. Wine Descriptors: Plum, blackberry, black tea, dark cocoa, violets
