Cabernet Sauvignon Spring Mountain District 2023
VINTAGE NOTES
2023 is an exceptional vintage marked by one of the longest growing seasons in over a decade. Significant winter rains followed by a warm dry spring supported healthy canopy growth through bloom. Cooler weather prevailed throughout the rest of the growing season aided by abundant sunshine that enabled grapes to ripen slowly and reach perfect maturity. The long growing season and extended “hang time” for grapes has produced wines with stunning, complex flavors and the structure for long term aging.
VINEYARD SOURCES
Straddling the forested northern and eastern slopes of the Mayacamas directly behind the town of St. Helena, Spring Mountain’s vineyards reach 2,200 feet in elevation and feature a variety of different aspects, a mix of volcanic and sedimentary soilsand cool growing conditions. In the summer, the morning sun reaches many of Spring Mountain’s vineyards above the fog line ensuring perfectly ripe grapes witha wide range of flavors for our winemakers to work with.
WINEMAKER NOTES
For the 2023 vintage, our winemakers blended 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 13% Merlot and 2% Malbec. After optical sorting, fermentation took place in 80% French oak barriques,30% new and 20% in stainless steel tanks, the wine was then aged for 18 months in French oak barriques of which 30% were new.
TASTING NOTES
NOSE: Powerful aromas ofblackberry, dark plum and red currantmixed withcocoa, tapenade and graphite.
PALATE: Medium full bodied youthful flavors of cassis, plum and red raspberry with hints of honey, juniper and leather.
