For Melissa, great Cabernet starts with exceptional fruit, but what makes this pairing especially compelling is how each vintage leaves its mark and how that character is shaped once the fruit reaches the cellar.

Barrel fermentation is central to Melissa’s winemaking approach at Alpha Omega. Rather than treating fermentation and barrel aging as separate steps, fermenting Cabernet directly in French oak allows the wine, tannin and oak to begin coming together from the very start. Each barrel becomes its own small fermentation vessel, giving Melissa the opportunity to follow its evolution individually before making the final blending decisions.

It’s a labor-intensive approach Alpha Omega has embraced since its first vintage, and one that becomes especially compelling when the cellar has remarkable vintages to work with.

The 2023 growing season was one of Napa Valley’s longest in more than a decade. Mild, consistent weather and extended hang time gave the fruit plenty of time to develop before harvest.

The 2021 vintage tells a different story. Yields were considerably smaller, with small berries carrying remarkable concentration into a smooth, even harvest. Now, with additional time in the library, we’re bringing a limited quantity back to share alongside the new 2023 Mount Veeder release.
