Nurturing Sustainability in the Wine Industry: Alpha Omega Winemaker Matt Brain on Responsible Craft
This post references a feature from Legends Behind the Craft, a podcast and video series hosted by Drew Thomas Hendricks and Bianca Harmon dedicated to exploring the people and practices shaping the modern wine industry.
Sustainability in the wine industry is not a trend. It is a commitment, one that Alpha Omega has honored since our earliest days on the Rutherford Bench. From our solar-powered winery to our Napa Green certification, the stewardship of this land is inseparable from the craft we practice here. So when the Legends Behind the Craft podcast invited our winemaker Matt Brain to discuss the future of sustainable winemaking, the conversation resonated deeply with everything we believe at Alpha Omega.
A Winemaker Rooted in Science and Place
Matt Brain brings a rare depth of knowledge to the cellar. He holds a master’s degree in biosciences from Sam Houston State University and a winemaking degree from UC Davis. His academic foundation is matched by extraordinary breadth of experience, spanning Treasury Wine Estates, Edna Valley Vineyards, Fresno State, and his own Baker and Brain Wines label.
Beyond winemaking, Matt has served on the Board of Directors for the World of Pinot Noir. He also partnered with The Vineyard Team as a Sustainability Auditor. In that role, he hosts a podcast promoting sustainable wine growing practices across the industry. Few voices in Napa Valley are better positioned to speak to both the science and the soul of responsible viticulture.
At Alpha Omega, that perspective finds its fullest expression. Our estate sits at 1155 Mee Lane in Rutherford, where the Mayacamas Mountains rise to the west and the vineyards draw from soils shaped over millennia. Farming here is not abstract. It is intimate. Every decision made in the vineyard and the cellar carries consequence for the land, the community, and the wines that carry our name.
Sustainability Beyond the Vineyard
In the Legends Behind the Craft conversation, Matt addressed something that often goes unexamined: the carbon footprint of wine packaging. Heavy glass bottles and packaging waste contribute meaningfully to a winery’s environmental impact. Transitioning to lighter glass, exploring biodegradable materials, and embracing cork recycling are practical, high-impact steps any winery can take. Moreover, Matt notes that these choices can improve a winery’s bottom line at the same time they reduce its environmental burden.
This holistic view of sustainability mirrors Alpha Omega’s own approach. Our winery operates almost entirely on solar power. We hold Napa Green certification for both our land and our winery operations, a dual designation that reflects rigorous standards across farming, water management, energy use, and waste reduction. These are not marketing gestures. They are the result of years of intentional work, guided by the belief that great wine and a healthy planet are not competing ambitions. They are the same ambition.
You can read more about how we approach that responsibility on our stewards of the land page.
How Alpha Omega’s Location Shapes the Craft
Rutherford is not simply an address. It is a distinct and celebrated wine-growing environment, one that Matt Brain discussed at length in the podcast. The Rutherford Bench is defined by its well-drained alluvial soils, warm afternoons, and the cooling influence of San Pablo Bay as evening approaches. These conditions produce Cabernet Sauvignon of singular character, wines with the depth and structure that collectors have come to associate with this storied corridor of Napa Valley.
Alpha Omega sources fruit not only from our estate vineyard directly in front of the winery, but from some of Napa Valley’s most celebrated sites. Our single vineyard collection draws from Beckstoffer To Kalon in Oakville, Beckstoffer Georges III in Rutherford, Beckstoffer Dr. Crane in St. Helena, and mountain sites including Stagecoach on Atlas Peak and the Drew Vineyard on Mount Veeder. Each location brings its own terroir signature. Each demands its own approach in the vineyard and cellar.
Sustainable farming practices, when applied with this level of site-specificity, do more than protect the environment. They protect the integrity of what each vineyard is capable of expressing.
Strategies for a Consumer-Focused, Sustainable Winery
One of the most important themes Matt explored is that sustainability must be consumer-facing to be truly transformative. Wineries that communicate their practices clearly, and authentically, build trust with a new generation of wine lovers who care about how their bottle was made and at what cost to the land.
At Alpha Omega, that transparency is woven into everything from our commitment to the Napa Valley community to the way we talk about our vineyards and farming decisions. Robin and Michelle Baggett founded this winery in 2006 with a vision grounded in craft, stewardship, and genuine connection to the people who share our wines. Two decades on, that vision has only deepened.
Sustainability, in its fullest sense, is about continuity. It is about farming in a way that leaves this land healthier for the next generation of growers, winemakers, and wine lovers. It is about building a winery that earns its place in this valley not just through the quality of its wines, but through the character of its choices.
