The Coombsville AVA is named after Nathan Coombs, who came to the Napa Valley in 1845 purchased 80 acres of land and founded the city of Napa. East of the town of Napa in the southern flank of the Vaca Range, Coombsville is known for its rolling hills, gravelly, well drained loam soils planted primarily to high quality Cabernet Sauvignon. Named after Dutch Presbyterian pastor, Peter Veeder, Mount Veeder is also known as “Napa’s Redwoods”, over 85% of this AVA is dense forest. Located in the southern end of the Mayacamas mountains, west of Napa, many vineyards are planted on steep hillsides as high as 2,500 feet and benefit from the cooling effects of altitude and nearby San Pablo Bay.
