Old-World Traditions, New World Terroir: Andy Erickson on the Alpha Omega Winemaking Philosophy

A thoughtful conversation about craft, transparency, and the pursuit of wines that speak unmistakably of their origins. That is what emerged when consulting winemaker Andy Erickson sat down to discuss the philosophy driving Alpha Omega’s approach to winemaking. The discussion centered on old-world techniques, site-specific viticulture, and the exceptional 2019 vintage , a year that gave Napa Valley some of its most refined and expressive Cabernet Sauvignon in recent memory.

Transparency as a Winemaking Philosophy

At Alpha Omega, the goal has always been wines that reveal their origins rather than obscure them. Every bottle begins in a specific place: a volcanic bench on Atlas Peak, the deep clay soils of the Rutherford floor, the windswept ridgelines of Mount Veeder, or the celebrated heart of Oakville. The winery sources from some of Napa Valley’s most storied sites, including Beckstoffer To Kalon, Beckstoffer Georges III, and Beckstoffer Dr. Crane. Each vineyard brings its own character to the glass.

This commitment to vineyard transparency is not incidental. It reflects a foundational belief held by founders Robin and Michelle Baggett: that the finest wines are grown, not manufactured. To learn more about that founding vision, explore the Alpha Omega founding story.

Old-world winemaking traditions carry a specific meaning in this context. They speak to restraint in the cellar, to a willingness to let the vineyard lead, and to techniques that preserve freshness and structure rather than amplify extraction. Andy Erickson, who brings decades of experience working with Napa Valley’s finest sites, has long been a guiding voice in that direction at Alpha Omega.

The 2019 Vintage: A Gift From the Land

The 2019 growing season rewarded patience. A wet winter replenished water reserves across Napa Valley. Spring arrived gradually, allowing for even bud break and healthy canopy development. Summer temperatures were moderate, with the marine layer drifting inland from San Pablo Bay each evening to cool the vines and preserve natural acidity. The result was a long, unhurried ripening season of the kind that produces wines of genuine complexity and balance.

In Rutherford, the 2019 vintage brought out the sub-appellation’s signature character: silken tannins, earthy elegance, and that distinctive dusty quality often called Rutherford dust. In Oakville, the transition from the deep alluvial soils near Highway 29 to the rockier volcanic benchland approaching the Silverado Trail yielded Cabernet with ink-like concentration and structural grace. Further up in the mountain appellations, Atlas Peak and Mount Veeder delivered their usual intensity, now tempered by 2019’s extraordinary natural balance.

These are wines built to age. They reward patience in the cellar as much as the growing season rewarded patience in the vineyard.

Old-World Techniques in a New World Setting

What does old-world technique actually look like at a boutique Napa Valley winery? It begins in the vineyard, with meticulous hand tending and low yields that concentrate flavor naturally. It continues into the cellar with careful use of French oak barriques, gentle extraction, and aging regimens designed to integrate tannin and deepen complexity without overpowering the fruit.

Alpha Omega’s single vineyard wines are the clearest expression of this philosophy. When a wine carries the name of a specific site, every decision in the cellar must serve that site’s story. Nothing is added to compensate for what the land already provides. Nothing is taken away that the land intended to give.

The AVA Series extends that same thinking across Napa Valley’s diverse sub-appellations. From the cool, fog-influenced soils of Oak Knoll in the south to the high-altitude volcanic terrain of Spring Mountain in the north, each wine in the AVA Series tells the story of its specific address.

Napa Valley Terroir Worth Exploring

The conversation between old-world tradition and new-world place is, in many ways, the defining story of fine Napa Valley winemaking. California’s climate brings a generosity and ripeness that no European appellation can fully replicate. Furthermore, the diversity of Napa Valley’s soils, elevations, and microclimates creates a mosaic of terroir expressions as complex as anything the old world has produced over centuries.

At Alpha Omega, that conversation happens in real time with every vintage. The winery’s estate sits on the Rutherford Bench at 1155 Mee Lane, where the estate 1155 Vineyard produces old vine Sauvignon Blanc from vines planted in 1993. Meanwhile, mountain fruit from Atlas Peak and Mount Veeder brings volcanic intensity and mountain spice. Together, they form a portfolio that captures Napa Valley’s full range of voice.

Alpha Omega is also deeply committed to the land itself. The estate operates almost entirely on solar power and holds Napa Green certification for both land and winery practices. To learn more about that commitment, visit the stewards of the land page.
