Originally a refueling stop for the railroad that connected Vallejo to Calistoga, Oakville was named for its dense groves of valley oaks. With a viticultural history dating back to the 1850’s, Oakville’s warm days and cool evenings accent deep, rich soils on the west side near Highway 29 that give way to rockier, thinner soils on the east side near Silverado Trail.

The name Rutherford comes from Thomas Rutherford, who married Elizabeth Yount, one of George Yount’s three daughters in 1864 and planted grapes soon after. Home to Alpha Omega winery, Rutherford has a perfect blend of sunny, warm days and breezy, cool evenings along with well drained, benchland soils that’s produced many of Napa Valley’s most famous, sought after wines.

Rugged Atlas Peak sits above the fog line on the western slopes of the Vaca Mountains and stretches to 2,663 feet in elevation. Influenced by the mountains, temperatures here average 10 to 15 degrees cooler than on the valley floor. Volcanic soil with a basaltic red color characterizes the Western-facing vineyards whose fruit our winemaking team crafted into a wine with impressive texture and density and that is as muscular as its birthplace.

Historically a stagecoach route that went eastward to the towns of Monticello and Sacramento, Atlas Peak is a huge open rocky amphitheater in the heart of the Vaca Mountains with vineyards located from 750 to over 2,500 feet planted in rocky, volcanic soils. The higher altitudes and nearby San Pablo Bay provide cooler nighttime temperatures that offset the warm, sunny days here.
