In 2009, Napa Valley had a very consistent growing season with no major issues. It was a very consistent vintage with stable temperatures and no big heat spells early in the season. Later in the season, we had a major tropical storm in October, followed by a smaller rain two weeks later which forced most winemakers to pick before the rain.
At Alpha Omega, we decided to let the fruit hang through the rain to obtain a better tannic ripeness. Since we have a triple sorting system we had the ability to sort out any grapes that were not up to standards. We thought it better to have fewer grapes at perfect ripeness.
Overall, the vintage is a little bit more like Bordeaux than Napa with wines with lower alcohol content and a little bit higher acidity. With such great balance between acidity and ripeness, these wines are very elegant and the vintage allows you to go further into the extraction of mouth feel due to its balance of freshness and acidity. This is a very elegant wine with a great aging potential.
