About This Wine
On the nose: Grapefruit zest, honey, lavender, hints of marzipan, white raspberries, crushed rocks, Fuji apples, mandarins, Meyer lemon meringue pie, slate
On the palate: Soft, juicy entrance, evolving on bright, multi-dimensional acidity perfectly balancing the roundness with hints of fresh pear, bergamot infusion, kiwi, passion fruit
Blend: 100% Chardonnay
Fermentation: 100% barrel fermented
Aging: 16 months in French oak, 30% new, 70% 1-year-old barrels
In 2017, the vines encountered early heat prior to the berries going through version. We usually see natural acidity maintained in white grapes as ripening often happens before the hottest days occur late in season. Aided by naturally thicker skins and the implementation of shade cloth in the vineyard, the early heat events basically left us unaffected. Patience was required as vines tend to slow down at higher temperatures extending the berries’ phenolic ripening.
Toyon Vineyard, in the celebrated Carneros AVA at the crossing of Highways 29 and 121 just southwest of the city of Napa, was first planted to vines in 1996. One of only a few hillside vineyards in the region, Toyon Vineyard, with its southwest exposure, is ideally situated to capture sunlight and retain moderate temperatures in an otherwise cooler climate.
“With slightly delayed budbreak and bloom in the 2017 growing season, the now 20-year old plantings of Chardonnay clones 76 and 96 showed that vine maturity often is the key to success. While dense on the palate, the wine still manages often is the key to success."
